Standards and Qualifications for NCCS Tournament Staff

The 3rd annual NCCS Summit took place last week, July 28-30 in Phoenix, AZ. The group addressed a number of important issues regarding NCCS events.

The NCCS committee approved job descriptions and qualifications for tournament staff, including the Director of Officials and Director of Competition positions at the national tournaments. Flag Football nationals will be the first tournament effected and then move into full effect with basketball regionals in the spring.

After receiving a few questions regarding Chad's original post. I've written the following to provide some clarification.

Question: Do we want to post applications or send out applications to find “experts” that can be clinicians for tournaments?

A: During the recent summit the NCCS Committee approved an interest form to be used for all NCCS events. We specifically chose interest rather than application form, to make it clear we are looking for reasons to include volunteers, as opposed to looking for reasons to exclude.

The National Flag Football Tournament will be the first event impacted and then the full roll-out will occur for regional and national basketball in the spring.

Additionally, the committee approved an application process, which will be spelled out during the next eFAST newsletter, August 13. My hope is that the NNC eventually creates a “Tournament Resource Center” web-page to help educate our professionals on the process, timelines, qualifications, etc . . .

Q: What do we want the qualifications to be for a regional official clinician? National clinician?

A: Since the link in the original post references flag football, there may be some confusion.

The committee “job” descriptions and minimum qualifications listed on that page are for ALL NCCS events (soccer, flag football, basketball, tennis, and volleyball). Furthermore, though not referenced on the site or in the blog post, the committee did establish minimum qualifications NCCS regional positions.

Since the full roll-out isn’t taking effect for football, the NNC didn’t post the qualifications for the Director of Officials (and others) at the regional level yet. They do, however, exist, and again, it is my hope that we create a sort of “one stop shop” in the form of a Tournament Resource web-page.

Q: How many clinicians per tournament do we want to shoot for?

A: The NCCS Tournament Operations Manual, a document two-years in the making, will be posted sometime in the near future. Tournaments hosts for regional flag football and basketball will be directly emailed with a link to the document and the document will be posted on the NCCS site too (again, the Tournament Resource web-page is the place I envision for this).

The manual not only addresses staffing guidelines for all committees (i.e. operations, all-tournament, officials), but also provides an appendix which includes the NCCS approved officials clinics, sample budgets, and loads of other information that will be invaluable for those hosting a tournament or those interested in doing so.

Many members of the SODP-Basketball and Flag Football Committees, as well as NIRSA professionals and students from around the country had a huge hand in creating the officials clinics and the qualifications and standards for clinicians at NCCS events. Put simply, the work of the NCCS Committee would have been impossible without the input from both of those specific SODP Committees.
